How to Get Your Business Cited by AI (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot)

AI assistants now answer the questions your customers used to type into Google. Here is how to become the source they quote, not the business they skip.

Why AI citations are the new front page

A growing share of buying research never reaches a list of blue links anymore. People ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, ask Perplexity to compare options, or read the AI Overview that sits above Google results. In each case an assistant reads the web, decides which sources to trust, and hands back a short answer with a few citations.

If your business is one of those cited sources, you get qualified attention at the exact moment someone is deciding. If you are not, you are invisible in a way that does not even show up in your rankings report. This is why answer-engine optimization has become its own discipline alongside traditional SEO.

How AI assistants choose what to cite

Answer engines do not invent facts about your business. They pull from content they can find, read, and trust. In practice that means they favor pages that clearly and directly answer a specific question, that are marked up so a machine knows what they are, and that load fast enough to be crawled and rendered.

They also lean on authority signals: consistent business information across the web, real reviews, and references from other credible sites. The clearer and more structured your content, the easier it is for a model to lift an accurate sentence from it and attribute it to you.

Write in a way machines can quote

The single biggest lever is structure. Assistants quote sentences, so give them clean, self-contained sentences to quote.

  • Use real questions as headings, the way people actually phrase them.
  • Answer each question directly in the first sentence, then expand.
  • Keep paragraphs short and one idea each.
  • Use lists and comparison tables for anything with steps or options.
  • Define your terms plainly, so a model can reuse the definition.

Add structured data and llms.txt

Structured data (schema.org markup) tells search engines and AI models exactly what a page is: an Organization, an FAQ, an Article, a Product. It removes guesswork and makes your content far more likely to be understood and quoted. Adding an llms.txt file, a plain-text summary of your site written for AI crawlers, reinforces the same thing.

Most sites skip both. Doing them well is one of the fastest ways to move from ignored to cited.

Build the authority behind the answer

Structure gets you readable; authority gets you trusted. Keep your name, address, and phone number identical everywhere. Earn genuine reviews. Get referenced by other reputable sites in your field. Assistants weigh these signals when deciding whose sentence to quote among several options.

How to measure your AI citations

You can track this. Bing Webmaster Tools reports how often Microsoft Copilot cites your pages. You can query ChatGPT and Perplexity directly for questions you want to win and see who they cite. And referral traffic from these assistants, though still small, is growing and worth watching.

Treat the first citation as a milestone. In our own client work, a properly optimized rebuild went from zero AI citations to hundreds within a year.

Common mistakes that keep you uncited

Most businesses are not uncited because their work is bad. They are uncited because their site makes it hard for a model to find and trust a clean answer. A few mistakes account for the majority of the problem.

  • Burying the answer: opening with background instead of answering the question in the first sentence.
  • Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt, sometimes without realizing it, so the assistants never see the page.
  • Shipping no structured data, leaving models to guess what the page even is.
  • Thin or duplicated content that offers nothing worth quoting.
  • A slow, heavy site that crawlers struggle to render.

Fix these and you remove the reasons an assistant would skip you. None of them require more content, just clearer, faster, better-structured content aimed at the questions you actually want to win.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Do AI citations actually drive traffic?

Some directly, through referral clicks, and more indirectly: being the cited source builds trust and brand recognition that shows up in your other channels. As assistant use grows, so does the direct traffic.

Is this different from SEO?

It overlaps but is not identical. Good SEO fundamentals help, but answer-engine optimization adds structure, schema, and clear question-and-answer formatting aimed specifically at being quoted, not just ranked.

How long does it take to get cited?

Technical groundwork can be in place in weeks. Citations tend to build over the following months as your content is crawled, trusted, and referenced.
