Is Wix Good for SEO? Wix vs a Custom-Built Website
Wix can get a small site online in an afternoon. When your website is how customers find you, its limits show up fast: speed on phones, how much you control, and whether you can ever take your site with you.
Wix vs customThe gist
- Google can crawl and rank Wix sites, so "Wix is bad for SEO" is too simple.
- The real tradeoffs: heavy pages, control only through Wix settings, add-on app fees, and no way to export your site.
- A hand-coded site loads only what each page needs, and every tag is set for Google and AI answers.
- When we moved a New York retail brand off Wix, its homepage went from about 655 KB of code to about 100 KB, before images.
The short answer
Yes, Google can crawl and rank a Wix site, and Wix has added real SEO settings over the years: page titles, descriptions, redirects, and fields for structured data. So the old line that "Wix is bad for SEO" is too simple.
The better question is whether Wix lets your site compete in your market. For a hobby site or a business card online, it usually does. For a business that depends on being found on Google and in AI answers, the platform's limits start to cost you.
Where Wix holds a business back
- Heavy pages. Every Wix page loads the builder's own code along with your content. That makes pages heavier than they need to be, and it shows most on phones, where most local searches happen.
- Control through settings, not code. You can change what Wix lets you change. You cannot fully control the code behind each page, so fine-tuning headings, structure, and what loads means working around the platform.
- Apps add up. Many features come from add-on apps. Each one can add more code to your pages and another monthly fee.
- Templates are hard to change. Once a Wix site is live, you cannot switch to a different template. A real redesign means rebuilding inside Wix.
Run your homepage through Google's free PageSpeed Insights test on the mobile setting. If the score is low or the page takes several seconds to show, that is the weight your customers feel too.
You rent a Wix site
This is the part most owners do not think about until they want to leave. Wix does not let you export your site's code and run it somewhere else. If you outgrow it, you start over.
Your site also lives on a monthly plan. If the plan lapses, you lose your custom domain and the premium features your site depends on. Everything you built stays tied to Wix.
What a custom build does differently
We build websites by hand, page by page, for how your customers search. Here is what that changes:
- Only the code each page needs. No builder framework riding along, so pages load fast on phones and slower connections.
- Every tag set on purpose. Headings, titles, and structured data for your services, locations, products, and questions, plus the files AI tools look for, so Google and ChatGPT read your business clearly.
- Standard code, no platform. The site is written in plain web code any developer can work with. No proprietary editor to stay locked into.
- No app fees. Features like our accessibility toolbar and Pulse heatmaps are built in, not rented one subscription at a time.
- Changes handled for you. New pages, posts, and updates are part of ongoing management, so the site keeps growing without you learning an editor.
A real example
A New York retail brand came to us on Wix. The site looked fine, but its homepage sent about 655 KB of code to every visitor before a single image loaded. We rebuilt it by hand. The new homepage sends about 100 KB, roughly 85% less, with a clean structure Google and AI tools can read.
Less code is not just tidier. It is a faster first impression on every phone that visits.
How we measured: the homepage HTML from public web-archive captures of the old Wix site (June 2025) and the new site (February 2026). Images are not included in either number.
When Wix is the right call
Wix is a good fit if you are testing an idea, need a few simple pages on a small budget, or genuinely want to build and update the site yourself. There is no shame in starting there.
It stops being the right call when the website is a real source of customers: when you need to rank in your area, show up in AI answers, load fast for people on phones, and grow without rebuilding every couple of years.
Moving off Wix without losing rankings
A move done carelessly can cost you the rankings you already have. Done right, it protects them:
- Map every old Wix address to its new page with a permanent redirect, including Wix's blog and product addresses.
- Keep the content that already ranks, and improve it rather than throwing it away.
- Update your Google Business Profile and other listings with the new links.
- Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console and watch rankings closely for the first few weeks.

Questions we get a lot
Can Google index a Wix website?
Yes. Google can crawl and rank Wix sites. The question is less whether Wix can rank and more whether its heavy pages and limited control let your site compete.
Is Wix bad for SEO?
Not bad, but limited. You control what Wix exposes in its settings, not the code itself, and every page carries the builder's own code. For a business that depends on search, those limits add up.
Can I export my Wix site to another host?
No. Wix does not let you export your site's code. Moving off Wix means rebuilding the site, ideally with redirects so you keep your rankings.
Will I lose my Google rankings if I leave Wix?
Not if the move is planned. Redirecting every old address to its new page, keeping the content that ranks, and watching Search Console after launch protects what you have built.
How long does it take to move off Wix?
Most sites launch in a few weeks, depending on size and how quickly we get content and feedback. You see a live preview the whole way.
